Telstra and Accenture join forces to accelerate AI transformation

January 17, 2025 — Telstra and Accenture announced a proposed joint venture (JV), aiming to significantly advance Telstra's data and AI capabilities, a media release by Accenture states. This collaboration will focus on expanding Telstra's network leadership, enhancing customer experiences, and streamlining internal operations.

The JV will leverage expertise from both companies, the media release states. Telstra's data and AI teams will collaborate with Accenture's specialists, building upon Telstra's existing work in data and AI infrastructure. Accenture's $3 billion investment in AI assets, solutions, and talent will provide Telstra with access to cutting-edge AI technologies.

A core objective of the JV is to revolutionize business processes through "agentic AI." This technology allows teams to work alongside intelligent AI systems to optimize tasks. The JV will also develop specialized AI tools to empower Telstra's workforce and cultivate data and AI fluency across the organization.

The proposed seven-year JV is subject to consultation with Telstra's employees and unions. Telstra's core data and AI workforce will be offered the opportunity to join the JV, with positions guaranteed at Telstra upon the JV's conclusion.

"This JV will enable us to leverage Accenture's global expertise to scale AI responsibly and rapidly," said Telstra CEO Vicki Brady. "We've already made significant progress with our AI initiatives, and this partnership will further enhance customer connectivity and experiences."

Julie Sweet, Chair and CEO of Accenture, echoed Ms. Brady's enthusiasm: "We are entering a new era of AI-driven transformation. This JV will propel Telstra into the next phase of its AI evolution, setting new standards for the telecom industry."

As part of this strategic shift, Telstra will consolidate its data and AI vendor support from 18 partners to two JVs: Quantium Telstra and the proposed JV with Accenture. This consolidation aims to foster deeper partnerships, shared accountability, and accelerated progress in data and AI.

The proposed JV will be majority-owned by Accenture (60%), with Telstra retaining control over its data and AI strategy.

This collaboration between Telstra and Accenture signifies a significant step towards Telstra's ambitious data and AI goals. By harnessing the power of AI, Telstra is poised to solidify its network leadership, deliver exceptional customer experiences, and empower its workforce for the future, the news release states.
